A year ago, I bought my son his first set of cards. I wanted to teach him to play, not pokerstars poker or texas holdem because he’s too young for that but the game, Go Fish. I initially found about it in the book that we read every night. The young boy was riding the Amtrak for the first time to visit his Grandma. Since it was an overnight trip, he and his mom played Go Fish to pass the time. My son was still 3 years old then and I wanted a new game for him since he keeps on playing with his cars. So when we were at Toy Kingdom, I searched and found the Go Fish cards. I wanted to buy it but my husband thought it was too expensive for a card game so I didn’t. Good thing I followed my husband’s advice because I found out later that you can play Go Fish using real cards. That’s why I bought one for Z.

So how can you play Go Fish with your little one? Go Fish can be played by 2 people. Ideally, it should be played by 3-6 people thought. As I have said, you can use a standard 52 deck card to play it. First, you have to deal five cards to each of the players. If you have only two players then you have to deal seven for each. Place the remaining cards with their faces down.

The player who is at the left of the dealer starts the game by asking another player for a specific rank. For example I ask Z, “Z, can you please give me your Queens?” Before I ask that make I make sure I also have a Queen in your set of cards and I have to hold it out so the others can see. If Z has a Queen or Queens then he is obliged to give it all to me.  I again can ask for another rank.  If Z does not have the rank I asked for then he’ll tell me, “Go Fish!” and then I have to get the top card of the undealt stock. If it’s the rank I asked for then I get the chance to ask again. When a player has collected a set of four cards with the same rank he has to show it and discard it face down.  The winner is the one who has collected the most cards with same ranks.

It’s January once again and it’s time to renew our Medicare plan. Here in the Philippines, what we have is MEDICard. My hubby has a plan provided by his company. Me and my son, Z, are his dependent and we have been enjoying the benefits for five years now. However, last December I gave birth to our second son. I asked my husband to enroll our newborn baby as soon as possible so he will also be covered. It turned out MEDICard will only cover babies that are three months and up or “Legitimate and or legally adopted children from 90 days old and up to 21 years old who are unmarried.” So that means our baby is not yet included.

If you are thinking of signing up for MEDICard, check first if you are eligible as member. Here’s what I got at the MEDICard Philippines website:

Maintaning a house can be difficult.  It also involves buying a lot of different cleaning products to keep your home spic and span.  In our house alone, we can’t go a day without cleaning products.  We need it on our dishes, countertops, clothes, windows,  and furniture. We rely so much on cleaning products that we do not pause and think what is actually in it.

Yes, the cleaning product you bought recently must be so good that it keeps even the toughest stain away.  But chances are it’s so toxic that it’s also harmful to your family’s health.  I remember the story I read about John Travolta’s son who died a few years back.  He was suffering from a brain disorder but he wasn’t born that way.  It was the result of him inhaling a toxic carpet cleaner.

Since most of the cleaning products we normally use are petroleum based, chances are it also has health and environmental side effects.  So before buying that much recommended cleaner be sure to research first on what ingredient it holds.  Better yet, opt for green cleaning products that may be a little milder but will be safe for you to use in your home.

What would you do if you have a birthday party with all of your loved ones celebrating the important occasion with you and you suddenly felt ill enough to warrant a hospital visit?  Would you be honest, say sorry, and leave or would you keep the pain to yourself and act as if nothing happened?

That must have been Sharon’s dilemma during her birthday concert.  While singing and dancing with Billy Crawford and RJ Jacinto onstage she fell down.  She got back up and even made fun of what happened saying, “O, kaya nyo yon? Ako lang ang may kaya nun!”  She then went on and acted as if nothing happened.  When the show was finally finished, her friend, Fanny Serrano, related how shocked they all were when she arrived at her dressing room, took off all her jewelries, and cried loudly in pain.  It turned out that the fall hurt more than she had led them on.  In fact, she was in terrible pain all throughout the show since the accident happened early on in the show.  She left the coliseum in a wheelchair and was rushed to the hospital.

A writer colleague narrated to me an unfortunate incident that happened to her last Dec. 2. While returning from her home province of Cavite (it was her mother’s death anniversary), her cellphone was suddenly barraged by text messages and cellphone calls. Thinking it was her boss from the magazine, she answered one call, only to be shocked to hear heavy, obscene breathing on the other end. All the texts and calls were from anonymous men wanting to contact a “Marites” from Manila. The bombardment continued non-stop so that she could not even turn off her cellphone. When she tried deleting text messages, they were only replaced by more texts. Furious, again, she tried talking/texting to these men to get them to stop, but they refused to believe that she was not Marites, some even going so far as to call her a “liar” and others begging her to answer them saying that they are not like her “boyfriend” who left her for another woman. She tried reporting the incident to Globe. But Customer Service ended up shuttling her back and forth between PrePaid Service and Roaming Service.

In the end, she managed to speak properly to one man who informed her that he got her text number from the “Love Letters” Radio Program on DXMS in Cotabato City. Being a member of the press, she took the extra mile to get the contact information of the station. Although the program’s deejay and the station (as well as the mother network) apologized to her for what happened, the damage had already been done. She could no longer use the number she had carefully held for 3 years, all because DXMS did not verify first that the cell number did indeed belong to this “Marites”. Worse, she had her privacy violated by these texters and callers.

My writer colleague has this advice for anyone who might find themselves in a similar situation…

1. DO NOT call your cellphone service provider. Based on the reactions of Globe, they clearly did not know what to do.

2. Go the extra mile to trace where your cellphone number was leaked or aired. File a complaint with the radio station in question.

3. File a similar complaint with the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC). Give them your name, address, telephone number, cellphone number and provide them with the list of cellphone numbers that have flooded your cellphone. They will either attempt to block the calls into your cellphone or have a disclaimer automatically sent to the caller.

4. File another complaint with the Kapisanan ng Mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas (KBP). They shall be the ones to issue official reprimands to erring radio stations/programs.

This incident should serve as a lesson to women who are so desperate to find boyfriends that they would request radio programs to air their cellphone numbers. Based on my colleague’s experience, you are only setting yourself up as prey to perverts and other sexual predators. This should also be a lesson to radio stations. Before airing any cellphone numbers or private information, these radio stations should verify first that the numbers indeed belong to their lovesick letter senders.
